Basic phrases to be polite in spanish

First things first, these are the basic phrases you need to know when traveling so you can interact with the locals and maintaining your good manners.

When you are in Spain and need to introduce yourself to another people, or are talking with other people and you miss something during the conversations, or just when you get together with some friends or when you leave … being polite is always a good thing.

So I hope this simple phrases are helpful for you when yo visit Spain or when you talk with Spanish people.

↪ “¡Hola!“: Hello!. Yes, firs things first. We can talk with another person who perhaps can help give us some indications that we might need at the airport, on the train …
↪ “Buenos días“: Good morning.
↪ “Buenas tardes“: Good afternoon/good evening.
↪ “Buenas noches“: Good night.
↪ “¿Cómo está?“: How are you? (formal, to a stranger).
↪ “¿Cómo estás?“: How are you? (informal, to someone you know).
↪ “Bien, gracias“: I’m fine, thank you.
↪ “¿Cómo te llamas?“: What’s your name?.
↪ “Me llamo …“: My name is …
↪ “Mucho gusto“; “Encantado/a de conocerte“: Nice to meet you.
↪ “¡Adiós!“: Goodbye!

And of course, let’s not forget the courtesy magic words in Spanish:

↪ “Por favor“: Please.
↪ “Gracias“: Thank you.
↪ “De nada“: You’re welcome.
↪ “Perdón, disculpe“: Excuse me.

If you get stuck in the conversation, or don’t understand something, you can always resort to these phrases in Spanish to get out of trouble:

↪ “Yo no entiendo lo que dijo“, or better “Perdona, pero no entendí lo que dijiste“: I don’t understand what you said.
↪ “Perdona, ¿Hablas inglés?“: Sorry, do you speak English?
↪ “Por favor, puede hablar un poco más despacio“: Please, can you speak a little slower. Try to say this softly, or it might sound rude. You can say this below “es que no entiendo bien lo que me dice” (it’s that I don’t quite understand what you are telling me).
↪ “¿Puede repetir eso, por favor?“: Can you repeat that, please?
