Map of autonomous communities of Spain and capitals
Okay, you want to come to Spain, but where to in Spain? This may not be a very large country, but keep in mind that it is very different from one corner to another.
First, let’s see a map of Spain that will help us to learn the Autonomous Communities of Spain and the cities that are their capitals.
Most capitals of the Autonomous Communities of Spain are also capital of one of the provinces that belong to the corresponding autonomous community. But there are some exceptions:
Santiago de Compostela is the capital of Galicia. The city belongs to the province of La Coruña, but the capital of that province is the city of La Coruña. In some cases you will find A Coruña, because in Galician language we say A Coruña instead of La Coruña.
Mérida is the capital of Extremadura. The city belongs to the province of Badajoz, but the capital of that province is the city of Badajoz.
Both Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria share the status of capital of the autonomous community of the Canary Islands. They are also the capital of their respective provinces.
At school is quite typical to learn all the autonomous communities and all the provinces of each autonomous community of Spain.

Most cities that are capital of province share the same name with the province. But there are some exceptions.
When the autonomous community only have one province, the name of the capital don’t match the name of the capital. Except for Murcia. In these cases the province and the autonomous community are the same, and the capital of the province is always the capital os the autonomous community.
When the autonomous community have more than one province, the name of the capitals of the provinces (here I am not talking about the capital of the autonomous communities) matches the names of the provinces. Except for the autonomous community of “el PaÃs Vasco”, where the name of each capital is different from the names of the provinces.
