Pronouncing in Spanish is not that difficult. You just have to follow the rules. Well, and train the mouth, the tongue and vocal cords so that they know how to pronounce the sounds of the new language that we are learning.
How to pronounce r and double r (rR) in Spanish
When to make soft r or hard r sound in Spanish (Sonido suave de la r y sonido fuerte de la r).
When the word finish with an r, that r always sounds like a soft r. E.g.: cantar; volar; aprender. Many foreigners pronounce it strong, because you tend to focus more on learning the strong sound of the r and you always end up using it. Well, we can accept that little mistake 😁.
When the word begins with r, that r always sounds like a hard r. E.g.: ratón; resta; redondo. You will never find a word in writing that begins with rr. For asian people is very difficult to pronunce this hard r, so it is accepted that they always pronunce these words with a soft r.
When the r is after another consonant, and then there is a vocal after the r, and they make a single syllable and so a single sound (the r always begins to the same silabe as the previous consonant except for the consonants in the next bullet point), the r sounds like a soft r but not so soft. E.g.: pre -> precioso; bru -> bruto; tro -> estropeado
After l, n and s when there is a single r (we never write double rr after l, n or s in any word), it always sounds like a hard r. E.g.: enredado; sonreír; alrededor; trasroscar. Notice that when there is an r after l, n or s that r always begins a new syllable and so a new sound: en-re-da-do; son-re-ir; al-re-de-dor; tras-ros-car.
When you have to read something and you see a rr in the middle of a word, it always sounds like a hard r. E.g.: arroz; perro; guitarra: a-rroz; pe-rro; gui-ta-rra. Yes, that rr always begins a new silabe and so a new sound.
In the next video you can find some tips to train your mouth and your tongue to pronounce the Spanish sounds of r correctly.
